El Instituto de Matemáticas de la UGR se equipa con ordenadores a coste cero dotados de software libre

Próximamente se inaugurará el Instituto de Matemáticas de la UGR que acoge la sede en Granada del Instituto Español de Matemáticas (IEMath). Este centro se está equipando con ordenadores preparados por la Oficina de Software Libre de la UGR (OSL), dotados del sistema operativo libre Kubuntu y de una serie de aplicaciones matemáticas también libres.
Estos equipos informáticos proceden de la puesta a punto de ordenadores retirados del servicio de diferentes dependencias de la Universidad de Granada (y de algunas empresas privadas como Tecforma), que han sido probados y acondicionados por la OSL con el apoyo del resto de la Delegación TIC del Rector, la Unidad de Calidad Ambiental y el Centro de Servicios de Informática y Redes de Comunicaciones de la Universidad de Granada. Con ellos, el IEMath se ha dotado de equipación informática a coste cero, tanto en material como en los programas que, al ser libres, son también gratuitos.
Estos ordenadores, junto con los donados en diferentes campañas, hacen que asciendan ya a un cuarto de millar los ordenadores recogidos y reacondicionados por la OSL. Por otra parte prueban que, en épocas de restricción de presupuesto para nuevas adquisiciones, el aprovechamiento de equipos y el software libre permiten dar nueva vida a este material informático y, sobre todo, no crear dependencias tecnológicas al no tener ningún tipo de licencias que obliguen al usuario a renovarlas cada cierto tiempo, informan desde la UGR.

From the geochemical analyses carried out on the sediments deposited during the past 10,000 years in the Laguna de Rio Seco lagoon, a remote alpine lake in Sierra Nevada, at 3,020 m. above sea level, evidence has been found of atmospheric pollution from lead. This contamination is traced back to metallurgical activities from 3,900 years ago (Early ), coinciding with an increase in and deforestation in southern Europe.

As the University of Granada researcher, Jose Antonio Lozano Rodriguez explains, «this data tells us of the great influence our ancestors had on the environment. Lead pollution gradually increased during the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age, coinciding with the development and expansion of metallurgy in southern Europe». The samples studied show a maximum contamination from lead about 2,900 years ago, which would imply an intense movement and manipulation of this metal in the area around .

Contamination during the Roman Empire
In the samples studied by the scientists, there are also high levels of atmospheric contamination from lead during the Roman Empire, when large quantities of this metal were extracted in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as during the past 300 years, coinciding with the Industrial Revolution and the reactivation of mining activity in southern Spain.

A curious detail also shown by the study is a reduction in from lead during the last few decades, which, as Lozano concludes, «suggests that the global measures taken to reduce lead emissions, such as the use of lead-free gasoline, have helped to reduce the levels of this metal in the atmosphere».
