Spanish Study Shows Smoking-Sport Link

– Spanish Study Shows Smoking-Sport Link

Spanish researchers say they have found a direct relation between sports and cutting adolescent tobacco usage.

Samplings of 3,000 adolescents ages 13 to 18 found 80 percent of those who played a sport did not smoke. This compared to 71.4 percent of physically inactive adolescents, reported researchers of the University of Granada, the Spanish National Research Council, the Universities of Murcia, Zaragoza and Cantabria and the Nuestra Senora de la Consolacion School of Granada. Their findings, summarized in a press release, are being published in the journal Nutricion Hospitalaria.

Their percentages reportedly compared with similar studies of adolescents done in the United States. In the Spanish scientists opinion, results show the importance of promoting physical activity and eradicating tobacco consumption among youth as part of dealing with obesity, diabetes, coronary disease, osteoporosis and cancer. As physical activity decreases among adolescents as they get older, tobacco consumption increases, researchers said. (c) UPI

Eight out of 10 adolescents taking part in sports activities dont smoke, according to a new study in Spain.

The study linking tobacco consumption and sports, based on a survey of 3,000 students between 13 and 18, was carried out by the University of Granada, Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the universities of Murcia, Zaragoza and Cantabria, and the Nuestra Senora de la Consolacion School of Granada.

The survey, published in the journal Nutricion Hospitalaria, showed that 80 percent of the Spanish adolescents who play a game do not smoke.

But it also showed that over 40 percent of the adolescents do not practise any physical activity.

The survey revealed that 15 percent adolescents are regular smokers, slightly more girls than boys. There was a clear correlation between the practice of physical activity and tobacco consumption.

It also found that 59.2 percent of adolescents are physically active, although there are significant differences, gender-wise – 71.1 percent of boys, against 46.7 percent of girls.

These results show the importance of promoting physical activity and eradicating smoking, since physical activity, diet and tobacco and alcohol consumption were found to be linked with obesity, diabetes, coronary disease, osteoporosis and cancer.

Physical Activity Linked To Tobacco Consumption

– Physical Activity Linked To Tobacco Consumption

A new study suggests that physically active adolescents are less likely to smoke than their non-active counterparts.

In a study involving 3,000 Spanish adolescents, Professors Pablo Tercedor, Palma Chillon, and Manuel Delgado, from University of Granada found that adolescents, who play a sport do not smoke usually, and more than 40 pct of the adolescents aged between 13 and 18 do not practice any physical activity.

The participants were given a questionnaire to know their habits. The survey showed that 80.9 per cent of the active subjects said that they do not smoke, compared to 71.4pct of the non-active adolescents.

It revealed that 59.2pct of the adolescents were physically active, with 71.1 pct of the boys as against 46.7 pct of the girls.
