Goji berries ‘have a significant placebo effect’

Goji berries will not have any positive effect on people that do not follow a balanced diet, according to a University of Granada professor specialist in Nutrition.

The species Lycium Barbarum is currently imported from China and comes from the Mediterranean regions and grows in other mild regions of the world.

While the consumption of Goji berries has risen dramatically over the last months, their properties have not been scientifically proven yet by any relevant clinical intervention study with humans. Most of Goji berries’ components are contained in the recommended fruit and vegetable intake in balanced diets.

The only difference is the «significant placebo effect» on people consuming them. Also, the species Lycium Barbarum belongs to the Solanaceae family, the same family to which potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and other vegetables included in the Mediterranean diet belong.

Such is the explanation given by Professor Emilio Mart¡nez de Victoria Munoz at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science of the University of Granada. He also remarks that the supposed scientific studies endorsing the beneficial properties of Goji berries «were exclusively developed in vitro and in animals in China, but few have been conducted in humans out of China», although «the effects are likely to be the same».

Goji berries contain numerous nutrients. This fruit contain antioxidants, complex polysaccharides (proteoglycan, which are considered to be the source of its beneficial effects on health) and monosaccharides, lutein and zeaxanthin (beneficial for the eyes), fiber, proteins and carbohydrates. hus, «these berries can not have any damaging or neutral effect on human health», the University of Granada professor stated. Caution must be taken with potential allergic reactions, and patients taking anticoagulant drugs should avoid the intake of this fruit.

However, «the consumption of these berries is but another fad» Mart¡nez de Victoria warned, remarking that «Goji berries will not have any positive effect on people who do not follow a balanced diet».

Anyway, anyone buying this product should pay attention to the label «to avoid adulterations, which are widely spread in the market». Berries must belong to the Lycium Barbarum or Lycium Chinense species, «which are the ones that contain the nutrients and healthy effects claimed».

The benefits have been published in the journal Planta medica (Medicinal Plant).

Protein Behind Breast Cancer Cells Resistance Identified

Researchers at the Andalusian Institute for Molecular Biology and Regenerative Medicine (CABIMER) and the University of Granada found that cFLIP -an inhibitor of death ligand-induced apoptosis- is not only essential in breast tumor cells resistance to TRAIL treatments (a death ligand with a potent therapeutic potential against cancer), but this protein is also key to the survival of such cancer cells.

They found that a variation in the expression of this protein may lead to the normal development of breast epithelium.

The study analyzed the role of cFLIP in breast cancer cells’ resistance to TRAIL-induced apoptosis. Thus, researchers concluded that cFLIP is key in these cells’ resistance to TRAIL.

Such conclusion was drawn from the evidence that the inhibition of their expression through treatments with Doxorubicin (anthracycline, widely used in chemotherapy) or with SAHA (Histone deacetylases inhibitor), as well as the silencing of its expression through cFLIP siRNA oligos (small interfering RNA), resulted in the sensitisation of breast cancer cells to TRAIL-induced apoptosis.

The researchers have proved that cFLIP plays a survival role in tumorous and non-tumorous breast epithelial cells, since the inhibition of its expression induces apoptosis.

Junk food fan? Drinking tea could keep the pounds at bay

Drinking tea may prevent weight gain caused by a junk food diet.

Researchers found regular consumption of tea also suppressed damaging changes in the blood linked to fatty foods that can lead to type 2 diabetes

They said the research on mice could signal another set of health benefits from tea drinking if they are confirmed in trials on humans.

In the study some mice were given a high fat diet and others a normal diet. Each of these two groups were then split into smaller groups and given water, black tea or green tea for 14 weeks.

Both types of tea suppressed body weight gain and the
build-up of belly fat linked to a fatty diet.

But black tea, which is used in most ordinary cuppas, also counteracted the harmful effects on the blood normally associated with a high-fat diet.

These included increases in cholesterol, high blood glucose and insulin resistance – a precursor to type 2 diabetes where the body does not efficiently use the insulin it produces. Rising obesity levels in Western countries have resulted in many more people having insulin resistance.

The study at Kobe University, Japan, was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
Eight out of ten Britons drink tea. Dr Carrie Ruxton from the industry backed Tea Advisory Panel said: ‘This study is good news for tea drinkers, particularly those who drink black tea.

‘Though the findings need to be confirmed in human studies, this study found that tea helped to prevent weight gain and adverse changes in blood glucose, glucose intolerance, insulin resistance and lipid regulation evoked by a high fat diet.
‘Black tea had particularly favourable effects on blood cholesterol and insulin resistance.

Tea drinking has already been linked with lowering the risk of heart disease, cancer and Parkinson’s disease. Other research shows drinking tea on a regular basis for ten or more years may improve bone density.

…but there’s no miracle in goji berriesTrendy goji berries are not especially good for you – unless you believe in their healing powers.

The goodness from the berries is mostly the result of a placebo effect, say researchers. Hailed as a super food, their popularity has soared on the back of claims of anti-ageing and cancer-preventing properties but they have not yet been proven.

The berries do have the same nutrients as other fruits and vegetables, but the difference is the effect on those who truly believe in their wonder properties.

Professor Emilio Martinez de Victoria Muqoz at the University of Granada warned that the berries were simply ‘another fad’, adding: ‘Goji berries will not have any positive effect on people who do not follow a balanced diet’.

Real Madrid team up with University of Kent for new research project

Spanish football giants Real Madrid have teamed up with the University of Kent as part of a sports science study.

The project will look at how trainee teachers view the integration of pupils with disabilities into physical education.

«Real has established a foundation which funds research projects with universities across Europe,» said sport management studies expert Dr Sakis Pappous. «But Kent is the first UK university to receive funding under this scheme.

«The Real Madrid Chair aims to foster the creation of new knowledge and advanced research and stimulate the integration of the academic and sports worlds.

«This project will have an intercultural element looking at how trainee teachers both in the UK and Spain view the inclusion of pupils with disabilities in PE.»

The research project will involve both sports science and psychology researchers from both Kent and Spain’s University of Granada.

Real Madrid’s Dr Celia Rico said: «We aim to stimulate university co-operation with the sports world and it is important to involve institutions from across Europe.»
