Loud thinking helps solve maths problems quickly

Loud thinking helps solve maths problems quickly

Those students who think aloud while solving such problems can so faster and have more possibilities of finding the right solution that those who do not do it. Likewise, drawing or making a pictorial representation relating to the subject also contributed to its solution, according to the study by Spain’s University of Granada (UGR).

The researchers analysed in depth the work of last-year students of the degree in mathematics of the UGR, who were isolated to solve a problem and were recorded on video so their speech could be studied later.

This work has been conducted by the professors Jose Luis Villegas Castellanos (of the University of the Andes, Venezuela) and Enrique Castro Martinez and Jose Gutierrez, of the University of Granada, says an UGR release.

This research work has revealed, that the ability in the management of representations (such as talking aloud or drawing the problems) “is closely related to the success in problems solution”.

These findings were published in Revista de Investigacion Psicoeducativa and the Electronic Journal of Research in Educational Psychology.

Spain dig fails to find poet Lorca\’s remains

Excavations in southern Spain have failed to find the remains of Spanish poet Frederico Garcia Lorca, whose 1936 killing became a symbol of a brutal civil war, a forensic report said on Friday.

Digging got under way last month on the rocky hillside believed for decades to have been an unmarked grave, and the failure casts doubt on whether Garcia Lorca\’s body will ever be found.

«No remains of human bones have appeared or other signs belonging to civil war graves,» a report by the University of Granada\’s Archaeology Department said.

Accounting for around 100,000 still presumed dead and missing in the 1936-39 Civil War, mostly shot by right-wing supporters of Francisco Franco, still divides Spaniards.

Few cases are as poignant, though, as that of Garcia Lorca, and investigations were delayed for decades by the civil war, 40 years of dictatorship, an uneasy transition to democracy and legal wrangling.

Local authorities ordered the excavation as part of a broader investigation into the remains of civil war victims.

Talk aloud to solve mathematical problems quickly

Can\’t solve a mathematical problem? Just talk aloud and see your troubles disappear, suggests a new study.

The University of Granada (Spain) study, which has been recently published in the journal «Revista de investigación psicoeductiva» and the Electronic Journal of Research in Educational Psychology, found that those students who think aloud while solving a mathematical problem can solve it faster and have more possibilities of finding the right solution that those who do not do it.

Likewise, drawing or making a pictorial representation relating to the also contributed to its solution.

To reach the conclusion, the authors analyzed in depth the work of three last-year students of the degree in Mathematics of the UGR, who were isolated separately to solve a problem and were recorded in video to study their speeches aloud later.

Although the researchers warn that the amount of information about the individual\’s conduct available to be analyzed when he speaks while solving a problem is higher than when he does not do so; their work has proved that this is an effective system and it «provides a valuable database to identify many of the contents, processes and strategies used solution of problems».

Grave of murdered Spanish poet remains unknown

Grave of murdered Spanish poet remains unknown

The body of Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca remains missing after a high-profile excavation in southern Spain failed to find human remains.

Garcia Lorca was executed in 1936 at the start of the Spanish Civil War and his killing became a symbol of General Francisco Franco\’s brutal regime.

Local authorities had ordered excavation of a hillside near Granada believed for decades to be a gravesite for execution victims.

It was the site that Manuel Castilla, a Franco supporter who claimed he had helped to bury Garcia Lorca, had pointed out to Irish historian Ian Gibson in 1966.

But no remains of human bones have been found, according to a report by archeologists from the University of Granada.

Work crews dug down 40 centimetres and then hit rock, reports said.

Garcia Lorca was an acclaimed poet and playwright who penned Blood Wedding, Poet in New York and Gypsy Ballads.

He was captured in August 1936 and shot for his suspected leftist sympathies, along with a teacher and two anarchists. More than 100,000 people went missing during the 1936-39 civil war.

Efforts to find where he was buried were delayed by 40 years of Franco\’s dictatorship and Spain\’s uneasy transition to democracy.

The poet\’s family had opposed the excavations but the families of other people believed to have been killed with him had supported efforts to find the bodies.

Spanish dig fails to find grave of poet Lorca

Excavations aimed at finding the remains of Spanish poet and dramatist Federico Garcia Lorca have drawn a blank, officials say.

The dig produced «not one bone, item of clothing or bullet shell», said Begona Alvarez, justice minister of Andalucia.

Lorca was murdered at the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 by right-wing supporters of Gen Francisco Franco.

The site on a hillside outside Granada was believed for decades to be a mass grave of civil war victims.

Correspondents say the failure casts doubt on whether the poet\’s remains will ever be found.

The two-month excavation near the town of Alfacar – carried out under tight security – had been requested by relatives of other men believed buried at the spot.

Lorca\’s surviving relatives gave DNA samples for the inquiry
It was one of several aimed at locating those still missing from Spain\’s bitter civil war.

«No remains of human bones have appeared or other signs belonging to civil war graves,» a report by archaeologists at the University of Granada said.

Ms Alvarez said the soil was only 40cm (16in) deep, making it too shallow for a grave.

Lorca was 38 when he died, murdered by fascists for his left-wing views, Republican sympathies and homosexuality.

He is best known for tragedies such as Blood Wedding and his poetry collections Poet in New York and Gypsy Ballads.

The poet\’s niece, Laura Garcia Lorca, declined to comment on the report but has repeatedly said the family opposed the excavations, because they did not believe the findings would help heal old wounds.

Garcia Lorca, known for works including his play «Blood wedding,» was captured in August 1936 and shot for his suspected leftist sympathies by supporters of a military uprising which took place the previous month.

Spain\’s most eminent 20th century poet and contemporary of artist Salvador Dali, Garcia Lorca was killed along with a teacher and two anarchists near the southern city of Granada.

The excavation at the Alfacar site on the outskirts of Granada took place on the spot where Manuel Castilla, who said he had helped to bury Garcia Lorca, took Irish author Ian Gibson in 1966. Gibson was not immediately available for comment.

A recent book by Spanish writer Gabriel Pozo, based on interviews with the daughter of the man who arrested Garcia Lorca, said Castilla may simply have misled Gibson.

Il trucco per la matematica? Ripetere a voce alta

Il trucco per la matematica? Ripetere a voce alta
