La Facultad de Ciencias del Deporte, primer centro de la Universidad de Granada en instalar un contenedor de compost

Permite reciclar los desechos de jardinería para transformarlos en abono orgánico

La Facultad de Ciencias del Deporte ha sido pionera en la UGR en instalar dentro de sus instalaciones un contenedor de compostaje, con una capacidad de 1050 litros, que permite la transformación de los desechos vegetales procedentes de jardinería en abono orgánico destinado a fertilizar la masa forestal que dispone esta Facultad.

El compostaje es el proceso de descomposición biológica de materiales orgánicos, como podas del jardín, y su transformación, mediante un proceso totalmente natural, en fertilizante orgánico. Es fácil de hacer y el producto resultante, compost, se puede utilizar como abono, mantillo o sustrato, lo cual beneficia el crecimiento de las plantas y el medio ambiente.

Entre los beneficios más interesantes del compostaje encontramos la reducción significativa de los residuos orgánicos, ayuda a las plantas y reduce la cantidad de materia orgánica de la basura doméstica que va a los vertederos, y por supuesto, un aspecto relevante, reduce costes a la universidad.

La acumulación de los residuos orgánicos en los vertederos no solo causa malos olores, sino que contribuye a la formación de líquidos peligrosos que contaminan las aguas y suelos, producen gases de efecto invernadero y ocupan un espacio útil. Según las estadísticas de la Consejería de Medio Ambiente de la Junta de Andalucía, casi la mitad de los residuos urbanos son materia orgánica que puede reciclarse en compost. Cuanto más compost se produzca, más se reducirán los costes de la recogida, transporte y tratamiento.

La instalación de este compost en la Facultad del Deporte se integra dentro de un proyecto muy ambicioso que prepara este centro, la creación del Aula de la Naturaleza, cuyos objetivos fundamentales son la sensibilización y la concienciación ambiental de los estudiantes, que permita ayudar a descubrir e interpretar los valores naturales y paisajísticos del entorno y buscar los efectos de la intervención humana en él, generar comportamientos positivos frente a la conservación y uso de los recursos naturales, así como fomentar el conocimiento de la riqueza natural y cultural, despertando el interés por su conservación.
