Researchers link child obesity to meals outside the home

A group of researchers from the University of Granada in Granada Spain discovered a strong link between children eating at home and their level of nutrition.
The study shows that children who eat lunch at home involving a prepared meal by their mother have a higher level of nutrition in general when compared to those who ate meals outside of the home that were prepared by somebody else.
The study involved a sample of 718 students from thirteen different schools across Granada between the ages of 9 – 17 years. The process of undergoing the study involved numerous anthropometric measurements to assess weight, size and BMI of the children.
The measurements included skin folds at their biceps, triceps, calves and thighs, subcapular and supraspinale, and each set of children’s measurements were cataloged by age and sex. In addition to measurements, the researchers created a questionnaire for the children that included consumption of foods and how often, the exercise habits of the children as well as their family environment.
The results published in the Nutricion Hospitalaria journal demonstrated that children who ate home cooked meals had a higher level of nutrition when compared to those children who ate the majority of their meals outside of the home. The study also concluded that the longer children spent playing video games, using the internet and watching television while at home, the higher the BMI was for each child.
Researchers concluded their findings by stating how it is extremely important to promote healthy habits within the family. Encourage playing more traditional, physical games and maintaining healthy eating habits
