Researchers from the University of Granada (UGR) will coordinate the design and development of a new multilingual electronic dictionary about coastal zones (German- Spanish- English) that will allow for the revision and updating of the terminology related to the integrated management of these areas as well as the communication exchange among professionals from different countries.
The dictionary will increase the knowledge about the coastal zone activity and ecosystems thanks to multimedia products that will provide information about the Andalusian coast for various users.
This project has received an acknowledgment of excellence from the Regional Ministry of Research, Science and Technology and has been supported with 160,536.30 euro.
The project, called ‘Marcos de conocimiento multilingües en la Gestión Integrada de Zonas Costeras (MarcoCosta)’ and directed by Pamela Faber Benítez, will create a list of specialised terms from which to build a conceptual architecture, that is to say, a knowledge basis upon which both the thesaurus and the dictionary can be developed. Likewise, the researchers will create a versatile computer forum so that the information stored in the database can be easily consulted in different ways. To facilitate the access to the image database within the multilingual electronic dictionary, the researchers chose the implementation of data visualisation technologies. The dictionary entries are based on a typology of graphic information which associates scientific and technical pictures to texts according to linguistic and cognitive criteria.
Social and scientific significance
On the one hand, the products derived from the project will enrich the terminological resources in Coastal Zones Management in Spanish, English, and German, created according to the ISO and UNE international and national standards applied to terminology. These products are meant to increase the work efficiency among both field professionals and communication professionals.
On the other hand, the cost-effectiveness of text searches by specialists, general users and communication professionals will be benefited as the easy access makes the specific trilingual terminological information more accessible for a broader group of users.
The terminological work proposed by the University of Granada reflects a fundamental contribution to any research focused on the development of studies about coastal spaces, marine resources, and technologies, in line with the current approaches in Computational Linguistics, Terminography and Translation.
