The University of Granada will impart the only international master on color in Europe which has received the Erasmus Mundus European recognition and has been developed in collaboration with three more European institutions. The UGR has 4 master programmes with the quality stamp Erasmus Mundus, a hallmark that recognizes the quality of the educational programmes which has only been given to 103 master programmes imparted by European institutions.
The master, entitled «Colour in Informatics and Media Technology», CIMET, will be developed at the Department of Optics of the Faculty of Science, will start to be imparted simultaneously next September in four European universities: Saint Etienne (France), Gjøvik (Norway), Joensuu (Finland) ad Granada (Spain).
The master’s degrees Erasmus Mundus, with category of official certificates in the new university system adapted to the European Space for Higher Education, intend to achieve a coordination between European universities (there must participate institutions from different countries) in order to attract ‘brains’ from third countries (most of who choose, at present, to study in the United States) and promote European mobility.
Selection criteria and scholarships
The master’s degree will take two years (120 ECTS credits) and the master’s official language will be English. The students, 12 European and 20 non-European countries, selected according to academic excellence criteria and curriculum, will be equitably distributed among the four universities. In order to be admitted as a student, the applicants must have 180 ECTS credits in science, computing, mathematics, physics, optics or similar fields, as well as establish certain English level.
The 20 students from non-European countries will receive an annual scholarship of 21,000 Euros. These 20 students have been selected among more than 100 candidates from 35 countries.
For the 8 better European students the master’s annual cost will be only 350 Euros and 3,350 Euros for the rest. The deadline to apply for these scholarships land the enrolment is April 14th 2008. Any students who wish to may apply for other additional scholarships such as those of the Socrates programme and other public and private organisms which foster international mobility.
Structure
The master has been structured in four semesters, the first starting with basic courses in photonics, optics, colour, digital image processing, algorithms design and statistics. In the second semester (imparted in Granada and in Saint Etienne) the student will study the first specialization in colour images; in the third, he will have to choose between a specialization in spectral colour (in Joensuu) or in media technologies (in Gjøvik). In the last semester, the student will carry out his master’s.
This master’s degree will train highly-qualified specialists in optics, photonics, colour, digital images processing, multispectral images, human and computational vision, media technology, etc. These interdisciplinary topics are in continuous evolution and development in the industrial and academic sector. At present, there is a great demand of postgraduates in sectors such as colour instrumentation, photonics, optic technologies, in devices for the formation of electronic images, in basic and applied research, etc. not just in Europe, but also in the rest of the world. The participation and sponsorship of several leading companies of the sector in the CIMET master will facilitate the students their access to the labour market of the students.
