A virtual Optics laboratory, object of a teaching innovation project of the Universidad de Granada

The teaching innovation project has been developed with the idea that students carry out a preparation work about the theoretical contents they need to develop their practice before entering the laboratory, as well as the materials they will use during the practice session; the title of the project is: “Full monitoring of students activity in Optics laboratory”. Professors Antonio García Beltrán, José Ramón Jiménez Cuesta, Francisco Pérez Ocón, Carlos Salas Hita and Juan Antonio Martínez Ferrer also take part in the project, coordinated by professor Eva María Valero Benito and approved by the Vice-Rectorate of Teaching Planning, Quality and Evaluation.

Other objectives of the project, in which more than 51 students have taken part in a first experimental phase, are to make an “objective” and continual assessment of each students easier for the teacher; and, finally, the exchange of experiences and interests during and after the project among the lecturers to obtain a better quality in practical teaching in the next years.

According to the persons in charge of this teaching innovation project, “according to our teaching experience in the Optics laboratory there are a lot of students who take part in the practice without having read before the practice outlines they were given until this year in a paper copy or having read them superficially, and they intend to leave the laboratory as soon as possible. However, practice reports handed in to the teacher after the session period were sometimes very well prepared (maybe because they cheated from others) and most students passed practices without difficulty.”
