UGR scholars analyse nutrient loss in crops of arid areas banks

José Aguilar Ruiz, Professor of the Department of Pedology and Agricultural Chemistry of the University of Granada, together with the head of the Soil and Water Department of the Centre for Research and Agricultural Training (CIFA), Armando Martínez Raya, have taken part in a study included in Víctor Hugo Durán Zuazo’s doctoral thesis.

The research work reveals the enormous amounts of nutrients natural products lose due to the lack of soil protection in uneven areas and cultivated banks.

The results of the research work suggest how farming techniques could be improved in wide areas of the arid regions of Eastern Andalusia, which is one of the most problematic areas both for the risk of nutrient loss and chemical pollution problems.

The novelty in relation to previous experiments is, precisely, that they take into account the pollution produced by wrong agricultural practices; they also analyse vegetable species which can help to crop protection.

The study has been published by the renowned North-American journal Water Air and Soil Pollution (http://www.environmental-center.com/magazine/kluwer/wasp/), specialized in the publication of studies on solutions for pollution problems in the biosphere.
