The UGR edits a book on astronomy, cartography and geodesy applied to Topography and Photogrammetry

Books on Topography and Photogrammetry do not usually analyse astronomic, cartographic and geodesic questions, essential to understand the meaning and applications of such subjects. According to the author, Mario Ruiz Morales, professor of the department of Graphic Expression in Architecture and Engineering of the Universidad de Granada, such premises justify the publication of this book entitled Complementos geodésicos y cartográficos (Geodesic Cartographic Complements) and published by Editorial Universidad de Granada.

“It will be –according to the author- an essential bibliographic reference for those students studying Cartographic Systems in the Higher Technical School of Civil Engineering of the University of Granada. A quick look at the index shows a first part focused on the definition of the astronomic and geodesic coordinates whose relation is proved basing on the essential geocentric and topocentric reference systems. The second part is a summary of the typical conformity of Mathematical Cartography, which ends in a detailed study of Lambert’s projection which is, together with the UTM, the prototype of the generally used cartographic systems. The last chapters tackle with topographic cartography, detailing its main peculiarities to end with a brief notes about Cartographic Institutions.”

Besides the chapters about geographic location, Earth reference systems, satellite location, revolution ellipsoid conformal representation, topographic cartography and cartographic institutions, the volume includes two annexes on the Cartography Act, which regulates this activity in Spain, and a listing including the European Cartographic Bodies and their postal and e-mail address.
