Prof. José Antonio Sabio Pinilla and María Manuela Fernández Sánchez, of the Department of Translation and Interpretation of the UGR, are the authors of the research work “Highlighting historical knowledge: Anthology of Portuguese texts on translations”. They intend to “to counteract the weight of canonical history which has included the names of the great countries as well as certain ways of mediation and cultural areas to the detriment of others, which has directly involved the exclusion of other traditions”. They want “research work to make progress in different directions to those established”.
Their work announces the existence of ‘peripheral’ traditions equally interesting drawing attention to the repercussions of the omission of Portuguese tradition at the time as elaborate on the research work on translation history to the peninsular context. From their point of view “translation phenomenon can not be studied in an isolated way”.
Historical research work as a narration
The authors have paid special attention to methodology: “Our work method is historiographical, from documents. The first step is the tracking of libraries and files, given that we have studies manuscripts and primary documents. The material resources are those of human sciences”. They start from “idea of the reconstruction of the past as a hypothesis, in an open way, suggesting a reading structured from a material selected with coherence. The underlying conception is a historical research work as a story with narrative capacity”.
Sabio and Fernández aspire to cooperate with colleagues from Spain and Portugal in an immediate future with the aim of setting up a specific research group on peninsular translation history applicable to peripheral cultures. So far, these researchers have expounded their findings in different national and international conferences in Spain, Portugal, Russia and Canada, as well as in Spanish journals like “Sendebar”, “Trans”, “Cuadernos de Filología”, “Hyeronimus Complutensis”, in Portuguese journals like “Discursos”, of Lisbon and Canadians like “Meta”, of Montreal. They have also published their works in publishing houses like “Comares”, of Granada, and “Edições Colibri”, of Lisbon.
