The University of Granada designs an innovative teaching project to reduce morbidity associated with the use of medicines

The objective of this project, called “Informe del Projecto de innovación docente en la asignatura de atención farmacéutica y práctica farmacéutica” (Report about the Innovative Teaching Project in the Subject of Pharmaceutical Care and Practice) is, among others, to enhance the knowledge of the public health problem associated with pharmacotherapy, analyzing the developments for the execution of the different pharmaceutical services in pharmaceutical care, especially in pharmaceutical follow-up as a new health technology, and providing data about the scientific and professional aspects of this activity. The project is being coordinated by Professor Maria José Faus Dáder, from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Participating in this project, together with the coordinator Maria José Faus, are professors Fernando Martínez Martínez, Ana Rosa Rubio Malo de Molina, Ángel Martín Reyes, Maria José Ferrer Martín, Inés Azpilicueta Centogotitabengoa, Martha Milena Silva Castro, Pilar García Delgado, Ana Ocaña Arenas, Daniel Sabater Hernández, Ingrid Ferrer López, Paloma Fajardo Paredes, José Pedro García Copas and Francisco González Gámez.

The project goal is to help students focus on the study and execution of exercises and practice experiences applicable to the theory previously learnt, thanks to the use of the PBL methodology (Problem Based Learning) in Pharmaceutical Care. This will allow students to carry out pharmacy practices belonging to a specific subject virtually, without attending the lessons necessarily.

Pharmaceutical Care

The purpose of this subject of pharmaceutical attention and practice, according to the professionals who are taking part in it, is to offer Health Science students the conceptual and methodological aspects of the Pharmaceutical Care as a practice, so as to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with the use of medicines.

The methodology for teaching the subject theory will involve the topics’ exposition for the understanding of conceptual aspects, through lessons given by the professor in charge. This methodology will follow a traditional lesson structure, using the most frequent teaching materials such as textbooks, scientific articles, etc.

However, according to professors, for the practical part of the subject the PBL method (Problem Based Learning) will be used. In the PBL method students are encouraged to face real life problems and learn how to solve them; searching and using the resources provided either individually or in collaborative groups.
