More than 90 digestive-system specialists take part in a book published by the UGR

The study of the digestive system is the widest section of the study of Medical Pathology. For this reason the work “Manual of Digestive Pathology” published in two volumes and more than 1300 pages has been prepared by more than 90 digestive-system specialists dedicated to hospital training.

Texts have been coordinated by Professors Antonio Mª Caballero Plasencia, Jorge Luis González Calvín, José Luis Martín Ruiz and Francisco Javier Salmerón Escobar, who maintain in the introduction of the book that in the last two decades there has been an impressive evolution of all the medical specialities; as regards Medical Pathology, there are three inflection points: the habitual practice of liver biopsy; the ordinary inclusion of ultrasound scanning; and, especially, digestive endoscopy. “thanks to that –they say – and the later complements (manometry, echoendoscopy, computarized axial tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, endoscopic capsule, etc.) nowadays we can gain access to and see any part of the Digestive System with less discomfort fot the patient and more information for the doctor”.

To do a correct exploration it is necessary, however, to know before the different possible diagnosis: “we are going to remove a lot of such diagnosis thanks to an appropiate case history and physical examination, as well as the information that we will obtain from those complementary explorations”.

According to the publishers of this textbook, they intend “to contribute the necessary clinical data to do differential diagnosis, since they are not going to change much with time, unlike diagnosis and therapeutical methods in constant change and evolution.”
