Water testing in Antarctica

– Water testing in Antarctica.

A manufacturer of water test instruments now says its products are being used on every continent on Earth. An expedition backed by Spain’s Ministry of Education doing research on global climate change is using water test meters from HM Digital, Inc. to analyze water samples taken on the Antarctic Peninsula, the company said in a February 1 press release.

The peninsula is the part of the Antarctic mainland that extends toward the southernmost tip of South America. Researchers from Spain’s University of Granada are there now during the Antarctic summer to collect and analyze water samples for 33 parameters set by the European Union, according to HM Digital.

HM Digital, based in Culver City, CA, says the expedition is using its COM-100 and PH-200 waterproof, battery-powered meters to test the conductivity, total dissolved solids and pH of Antarctic waters. An expedition leader was quoted by the company as saying that the meters are working well sampling the near-freezing waters.

Charles Lee, HM Digital managing director, said the company’s meters have been sold and used on every other continent, but he never suspected they would be used in Antarctica. The researchers will return to Spain in mid-February and present their results later.
