Scientists develop new ozone/carbon method

GRANADA, SPAIN – Researchers at the University of Granada have developed a technique that combines low doses of ozone with activated carbon to purify drinking water, according to a recent report in Medical News Today.

The research project began four years ago with the goal of reducing the amount of ozone used to eliminate organic pollutants in drinking water, the report said.

Scientists managed to reduce ozone doses needed for purification and discovered that adding low doses of highly-absorbent activated carbon sped up the elimination of organic pollutants present in water, according to the story.

Although the technique has been used to purify drinking water, it can also be applied for use in wastewater treatment, swimming pools and for industrial purposes, the report noted.
