Presentation of the Optirail project for advanced management of railway infrastructure maintenance

The Malaga Rail Technology Centre hosted the presentation of the Optirail project, which will be carried out by a consortium led by the company Vias and Adif that also includes international participation. The project is co-financed within the European Union’s VII Framework Programme.

(31/10/2012) Optirail is a project for the advanced management of railway maintenance based on computational intelligence techniques that will enable the better cross-border coordination for decision making of railway infrastructure maintenance. It has a budget close to 4 million euros, of which 2.7 million euros are financed by the European Union.

In addition to Adif and Vias, the research consortium will also include the participation of the University of Granada and Cartif in Spain, Mer Mec Spa in Italy, Evoleo Technologies in Portugal, Ostfalia University in Germany, Luleå University of Technology in Sweden and Stiftesen and Sintef in Norway.

«Optirail. Development of a Smart Framework based on Knowledge to support decision making in elderly transport railway networks maintenance» plans to develop a tool based on fuzzy intelligent techniques to manage all the elements that are relevant for infrastructure maintenance, predicting future conservation needs with optimal allocations of resources.

Besides the Optirail project, Adif and Vias collaborate on several research projects concerning siding repairs by laser; rigid catenary with polymer materials; computational intelligence and image analysis techniques for tunnel excavation; and track monitoring and examination through laser sensors.
