Soon, select students and faculty from the University of Madras will get opportunities to study at almost no cost in European universities.
The university announced on Thursday that its proposal for the Man Health, Environment, Biodiversity for Asia (MAHEVA) Project was accepted by Erasmus Mundus, an organisation which facilitates student exchange programmes among universities across the world, through a partnership with University Montpellier in France.
» Erasmus Mundus has set aside 3 million euros to finance eight consortiums and allotted 300,000 euros for 100 mobilities between European and Asian universities. Each student, whether at the postgraduate, doctoral or post doctoral level, selected for the programme stands to get between 1,000 and 1,800 euros a month as allowance and full tuition waiver for the period of study, which could be from six months to 4 years. For faculty, it will be 2,500 euros a month for a 1-3 month period,» said professor Chitra Krishnan, director of the International Centre of UoM.
Students and faculty can choose from 18 universities, including Pierre et Marie Curie University in France, the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka, University of Granada in Spain, Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand, Pavia University in Italy, University Putra Malaysia, Louvain Catholic University in Belgium and the National University of Mongolia.
Madras University will offer courses in business studies, management sciences, geography, geology, medical sciences, natural sciences and social sciences for students and faculty from partner institutions. «We have decided to select eight students, including three PG students, three at the doctorate and two at the post doctorate levels, and two faculty for the exchange programmes. The programmes will start in January 2011,» said vice-chancellor G Thiruvasagam.
