Sexist jokes enhance violence against women

According to a latest research, sexist jokes read or listened to by men, encourage an attitude, that equates violence against women, enhancing their macho image.

The study was conducted by scientists at the University of Granada in Spain who distributed questionnaires to a group of 109 people aged between 18 and 26 years.

For the study, the scientists showed two series of jokes, one of them being sexist where women, in a way were degraded, and the other, that was without any sexist content.

The researchers then made them view different clippings, where women were assaulted and battered, ranging from minor to serious harassment cases; and asked for their reactions – how would they react in that particular situation.

The result of the test showed that those subjects who saw the series of jokes without any sexist content, were tolerant enough to female assaults and battering, as compared to those who watched the other content.

Researchers however, have warned against subjects who watched the series that showed women being harassed, that such individuals have nil tendency to tolerate violence against women.

Few perceptions of men’s sexist attitude that were recorded were: “Deep down, feminists intend women to be more powerful than men”; “Most of the women do not fully appreciate what men do for them”; and “There are many women who make sexual insinuations to men and later they reject their advances just to make fun of them”.

The findings of the study are scheduled for its publication in the US Journal of Interpersonal Violence.
