Library selling a ‘Day at the Beach’

Salisbury Public Library\’s newest fundraiser is a real «Day at the Beach.» It\’s a DVD created from the library\’s postcard and photo collection. Money raised from the sale of the DVDs go to the Trustees\’ Building Fund.

The DVD was created by Joe Stucker, a Boston University sophomore who has worked at the library for four years, under the supervision of Karen MacInnis, treasurer of the trustees and curator of the Marblehead Museum and Historical Society & the Jeremiah Lee Mansion in Marblehead.

Book enthusiasts should look forward to two important library events. It\’s annual Book Sale, Oct. 17 to 19, and its second Antiques Appraisal Day coming in November.

The polls at the William Hilton Senior Center will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow for the state primary election.

Absentee ballot applications for this election will be accepted at the town clerk\’s office until noon today.

The presidential election is slated for Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Nicole Ann Guilmette, daughter of Ron and Ann Marie Guilmette, recently graduated magna cum laude from Assumption College in Worcester. Nicole was a Dean\’s List student who received The Honors Award in Organizational Communication from the Department of Business Studies. She was also inducted into Sigma Delta Pi, the National Spanish Honors Society, after studying at the University of Granada in Granada, Spain.

She has accepted a position with Polartec in Lawrence where she will be the customer service representative for the company\’s Pacific Rim countries.

The Massachusetts Community Development Finance Corporation will host an event at Old Time Sports, 10 Fanaras Drive, tomorrow to promote the quasi-public community development corporation\’s lending programs for small businesses that may not be able to get sufficient capital from traditional lenders. The CDFC approved a second line of credit for Old Time Sports.

The event illustrates how the CDFC can provide small businesses financing through a public/private partnership to expand in a way that can bring new jobs to the area, as it did with Old Time Sports.

The event will include a tour of Old Time Sports, a textile manufacturer that provides clothing for the NHL.

The Coastal Trails Coalition in cooperation with the Salisbury Coastal Trails group is among the 140 organizations in Essex County participating in the 7th annual Trails and Sails 2008 weekend running Sept. 26 through 28.

The weekend offers more than 200 free events hosted by 140 nonprofit community organizations. The Old Eastern Marsh Trail Walk offers participants a chance to walk along an abandoned rail bed, once part of the Boston and Maine Railroad, from the Merrimack River to Town Creek in Salisbury. A brief history of the railroad will be provided, including a description of the bridges built at the crossing.

There will be two walks, each lasting approximately one hour and 20 minutes. The first walk will begin on Saturday at noon, the second on Sunday at 1 p.m. Parking is available at the starting point off Friedenfels Road in Salisbury. Participants should be able to walk two miles over unpaved terrain with varying inclines.
