Gall Bladder Cancer – Researchers Reveal New And More Accurate Diagnostic Technique

Researchers at the University of Granada recently announced that they had successfully used a new technique known as FDG positron emission tomography scanning to diagnose gall bladder cancer, achieving results that were understood to be significantly more accurate than current diagnostic methods. Gall bladder cancer is an extremely deadly form of cancer, which makes an accurate diagnosis of paramount importance, as it would enable timely and appropriate treatment to be administered to the patient and significantly improve the prognosis of the disease.

This groundbreaking study was conducted by Carlos Ramos Font, Sc.D., under the direction of Professor Nicolás Olea Serrano of the University of Granada, Professor José Manuel Llamas Elvira of the University of Granada as well as the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the Hospital Virgen de las Nieves, and Manuel Gómez Río, also from the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the Hospital Virgen de las Nieves. The researchers who conducted this study concluded that FDG positron emission tomography scanning “is a valid and accurate method for precise staging of patients with suspected gall bladder cancer, which allows to determine the appropriate therapy and treatment, and to optimize the use of the resources available. Each patient with suspected cancer should be subjected to this type of imaging diagnosis, to determine the nature of such process.”
