Spanish develop RFID system to assist elderly

Researchers at the University of Granada in Spain have developed an in-home RFID system that reminds elderly individuals when they have forgotten to do simple tasks, such as taking medication or grabbing their keys when they leave home.

Under the system users place RFID labels on objects around the home that are interacted with most often, such as medication bottles or a cell phone. Each time these objects are used the labels communicate with a computer or mobile device installed in the home, or at a nearby assistance center, recording the interaction.

Through artificial intelligence the system develops a list of actions, such as remembering to take medication, and sounds a small alarm when these actions are not completed.

The system is designed to be an unobtrusive way for special needs individuals to receive help while still maintaining their independence.
