Seminario | «Process developing and optimisation for plant-based cancer treatment pharmaceuticals»
Seminario impartido por Luis Toronjo-Urquiza (The University of Adelaide, Australia).
Resumen:
This seminar presents the development of a scalable, efficient process for extracting, filtering, and purifying parthenolide, an anticancer compound derived from feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium). Recognized for its multi-pathway action in cancer treatment, parthenolide’s commercial production has been hindered by processing challenges and high costs. This research addresses these barriers through optimized stages of extraction, filtration, and reverse-phase chromatography to enhance both yield and purity. The team evaluated various solvents and extraction conditions to determine the most effective parameters, while employing a combination of dead-end and tangential flow filtration to ensure efficient impurity separation and product integrity. In chromatography, different column types and solvents were systematically studied to maximize separation efficiency and reduce impurities. An eco-friendly approach was also integrated, using ethanol as a sustainable solvent alternative where feasible, balancing environmental impact with process demands. This collaborative project, led by the University of Adelaide and Plantworx Organics, is funded by the Defence Innovation Partnership and SAiGENCI, aiming to advance parthenolide production for preclinical applications.
