Seminario | Isotope Mass Spectrometry and its applications in the Nuclear Industry and in Geology

Shahid Sayyid

Ciencias

Seminario impartido por Shahid Sayyid (Formerly in VG Isotopes, UK).

Abstract:

The seminar is intended as an introduction to the vast field of isotope mass spectrometry, with an emphasis on its applications in the fields of earth and environmental sciences and topics relevant to the nuclear industry. This will be interspersed with the history of developments, starting from around 1940.

The topic naturally divides itself into the isotopic analysis of stable isotopes such as those of Carbon and Oxygen with applications in the determinations of temperature of ocean waters in the past and the elucidation of historical atmospheres. The second part involves the analysis of radiogenic isotopes such as Potassium, Rubidium and Uranium with applications in the determination of the ages of rock samples.

The latter part includes the application of the technique to the discovery of the fissionable Uranium isotope and the discovery of a natural Uranium reactor in Gabon in West Africa.
