Seminario impartido por Adrián Díaz Acosta (Grupo de Física de Fluidos y Biocoloides, Universidad de Granada).

Resumen:

Liquid crystals are states of matter between isotropic fluids and crystalline solids, blending properties from both states to form their own. They come in different phases according to the structure of their constituents and the resulting positional and orientational ordering. Nematic (N) phases emerge when alignment dominates, while smectic (Sm) phases are layered structures exhibiting both orientational and positional ordering. We investigate a family of board-shaped molecules, recently studied experimentally whose interest is in their potential of self-assembling into biaxial nematic phases, by many considered as the holy grail of liquid crystals. By performing atomistic Molecular Dynamics simulations, we have measured their structural and dynamical properties. We observed that two of these mesogens exhibit a dominant orientation along their main axis and a slight order along the minor ones, suggesting the occurrence of very weak, almost negligible biaxiality.
