Tindara Addabbo.

Ciencias Sociales y Jurídicas

Conferencia impartida por Tindara Addabbo (Departamento de Economía Marco Biaggi. Universidad de Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE)).

Resumen:

This talk presents the main findings of an analysis of the employment conditions and earnings of young people aged between 25 and 40 with a bachelor’s degree or higher qualification (thereafter talents) in Eu-countries characterized by different degree of attractiveness of high skilled workers (amongst them Germany, France, UK, Spain and Italy) and different presence of youth having achieved tertiary education. The reason for this special focus is connected to the potential contribution that talents can provide to countries in terms of growth and innovation and to understand the reasons of observed inequalities in working conditions that can determine different degrees of talents attractiveness and mobility across EU countries. Not attracting young talents and seeing them migrate to other countries, can be considered detrimental especially for countries like Italy with a low economic growth, skill shortages, and characterized by aging and low fertility rates.
According to the literature, even though men and women share similar intentions to migrate, women who migrate independently face more obstacles, such as gender norms and limited access to resources, and therefore less orientation is observed in undertaking migration than men, on the other hand women who migrate are less likely to return to the country of origin. Evidence gathered through qualitative surveys finds the expectation of suffering more discrimination in the country of origin and less likelihood of a career and/or a less developed social infrastructure among the reasons women give for not returning to their country of origin.
The use of EU Labor force survey data and European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions Survey (EU-SILC) survey, allows obtaining comparable information across countries.
