Abstract: We study approximation on spheres using kernel methods where the spheres are allowed to be of any space dimension. The approximations are usually defined by interpolation where the data points may be scattered over the sphere and there may be any number of them. Using these kernels and spherical distances we show that there are large classes of kernels that admit unique solutions to such interpolation problems by solving strictly positive definite linear systems, and we describe how to identify these kernels.
This is joint work with Janin Jäger of Giessen University.
