Acción formativa. What is Core and What is Marginal in Education? The Example of Music

Presentación/Descripción de la actividad: Education entails a divide between the core curriculum and other learning content. It is obvious that in comparison to languages and natural sciences, cultural practices such as music appear marginal and of lesser relevance to academic success and achievement.
However, a plethora of research seems to suggest the exact opposite. For example, a large-scale Canadian study observed that high school students who engaged in music were academically about one year ahead of their peers without training. In one approach, we will address some of the literature on music and academic achievement, in another, we will address music as a resource for wellbeing and quality of life. We will unravel some strengths and pitfalls of these approaches, and try to develop our own view on an education system that needs culture at its core.
