Post-doc position at NOAA in Boulder (USA)

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) has a research associate position within the Tropospheric Chemistry research group at the Chemical Sciences Division of the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder, CO.

The candidate will work with custom-built, high sensitivity instruments based on cavity-enhanced spectroscopy to measure atmospheric trace gases and aerosols. The candidate will design and construct new instruments, or modify existing instruments, and will deploy these instruments at ground sites or on research aircraft as part of intensive field campaigns. Such field deployments will require travel for extended periods of time. The project will also involve laboratory work for analytical characterization of instruments and for elucidation of fundamental physical and chemical processes relevant to interpretation of field data. The overall goal of  the research will be to better characterize emissions and atmospheric chemical processes that affect air quality and climate.

Duties:

• Design and build custom analytical instrumentation using cavity enhanced spectroscopy for  atmospheric trace gas and aerosol measurement and / or modify and characterize existing instruments.
• Participate in NOAA atmospheric chemistry field intensives for research in climate and air quality.
• Undertake laboratory experiments to validate and improve instruments and to aid in the interpretation of field data.
• Analyze field and laboratory data, and present scientific results at meetings and in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Desired qualifications:

• PhD (required) in chemistry, physics, atmospheric science or related field.
• Experience with experimental techniques commonly used in atmospheric chemistry research. Experience with optical spectroscopy is strongly desired, though not required.
• Instrumental design skills, including technical drawing, machine shop, electronics, and data acquisition software.
• Scientific analysis skills, including data analysis software, scientific writing and presentation.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a research group.

Applications will be reviewed starting May 15, 2012, and will be open until position is filled
