Day 1 (24/05/10) – Approaches to knowledge: epistemology and the qualitative research process; examples of conceptual frameworks; the review of literature; setting, participants, instruments participate in the conceptual choices; hypothesis, objectives or questions; characteristics of research projects that succeed and those that fail. Research for social justice.

Day 2 (25/05/10) – Qualitative research methods; research design and design research; participatory action research; ethnography and case studies; semi-directed interviewing; phenomenological interviewing; video study groups; classroom observations.

Day 3 (26/05/10) – Qualitative data collection; data gathering methods; participatory observation; non participatory methods and verbal protocols; notetaking; entering the interview process; classroom observation; audio and video recording; stimulated record, objectification and shared reflection; hermeneutic approach versus reliability and validity; veridicity and representativeness;

Day 4 (27/05/10) – Qualitative analysis methods; the categorization of data; top-down and emergent coding; qualitative software; video data; interpretation; prototypicality and thematic analysis; constant comparison and grounded theory; grammar of interactions; conversation analysis; narrative analysis; critical discourse analysis; vertical case study.

Day 5 (28/05/10) – The qualitative research report; structure of thesis and articles; presenting the analysis and discussion; research ethics; figures and tables; APA style; tips for successfu scientific publishing.
