    An Introduction to the Mathematics of Big Data
    Resumen: We present a short introduction to the Mathematics of Big Data. After introducing Big Data definitions and challenges, the formulation of the classical Support Vector Machines model for data classification will be discussed along with more recent formulations which involve nonsmooth optimization techniques, multiobjective optimization, sparsity, and entropy

    The Collage Method Approach to Solving Inverse Problems
    Resumen: Students travel through most of their schooling facing “direct” problems: loosely, given a bunch of information about a problem at hand, find the answer (typically one we know exists and is unique). In many application areas —economics, biology, image science, physics, engineering, and more— we often encounter the opposite problem, an “inverse” problem: given information about the solution, determine (or estimate) the parameters of the problem (or perhaps even the structure of the model). Inverse problems are often ill-posed; there may be many or perhaps even no acceptable solutions. There are many approaches to dealing with inverse problems. In this talk, I will present the key ideas behind the Collage Method approach to solving inverse problems for differential equations, a notion established and developed in the literature by our group of collaborators along with many research students. Although I will show and discuss mathematical formulations and include mathematical detail for very different inverse problem frameworks, the point will be to highlight the conceptual and philosophical drivers that motivate all of the work and give it a sense of cohesiveness.
