Conferencia a cargo de Maurizio Torrente (Assoc. Professor, University of Sannio, Italia)
In the traditional literature, the stratigraphic signature of the rift basin has been defined in term of a succession characterized by early-, syn-, climax and post-rift deposits and genetically-linked rift basins are referred to basins that develop into a system of half-grabens connected by a common detached fault. Yet recent papers document that the evolution of a rift is more complex, resulting in the superposition of rift basins that grow in different structural conditions. The aim of the presentation is twofold: to make an excursus of the state of the art and of the open questions of the Tyrrhenian Sea backarc development; to present a new model of opening of the Tyrrhenian Sea genetically-linked basins that developed contemporaneously in triangular basins or complex rift systems.
BIO: Since 2001 Maurizio Torrente have been Associate Professor at the Department of Sciences and Technologies at the University of Sannio (Benevento, Italy) where he taught «Structural Geology» and «Field Geology» courses. He acquired a PhD in 1990 from the University of Naples. In 1991 was a visiting CNR-NATO research fellow at the University of Colorado, Boulder, USA. Prof. Torrente has been also a visiting professor at the Universities of Aberdeen (2013-2016) and Strasbourg (2017-2018).
Maurizio Torrente is interested in upper crustal tectonic processes (thrusting and extension) that interact with basin evolution, magmatic activity and volcanic eruptions. For his research, he uses varied methodologies like construction of balanced sections, quantitative assessment of the extensional strain, geological interpretation of seismic reflection profiles, and build of fully 3-D subsurface models integrating geological and geophysical information. Current research topics are tectono-stratigraphic evolution of the Central Mediterranean backarc basins and volcanic and tectonic processes in the Campania region including Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei active volcanoes.
